Wildlife at KirnicamaBIRDLIFE:
Are you interested in Bird Watching? Over 100 species of birds have been identified in the Dayboro district. The planting of native plants and trees around Kirnicama has encouraged regular visits by double bar and red-brow finches, quail, rainbow lorikeets, pale headed rosellas, king parrots, a range of doves and pigeons and numerous honey eaters.
Because of our high location we are able to observe the wedgetail eagles as they ride the wind currents over the valley on our property. Other hawks, eagles and falcons can be spotted from time to time.
Water birds near the dam may include ducks, cormorants, cranes, grebes and kingfishers.
We also have our share of night birds, including tawny frogmouths and other owls. ANIMAL LIFE:
At dusk you may spot our large brown hares and the dainty wallabies, whilst squirrel gliders and possums are also frequent visitors. Marianne’s favourites are the many varieties of frogs, which appear like magic, after the rains and attest to a healthy environment. INSECTS:
For butterfly and moth enthusiasts, like Don, Kirnicama is a popular hill-topping and viewing area for a huge range of these beautiful insects, many of which may be viewed in Don’s extensive collection, dating back to the 1890’s. FISH:
We have seeded the dam with gold and silver perch and red claw crayfish and regularly spot spangled perch. Guests are encouraged to feed and observe our small fish population.
Guests enjoy the pecking order as local birds dine out at Kirnicama.
